At what point are we talking about proteins rather than peptides? Traditionally it has been said by some that a sequence of 50 amino acids or more is a protein, and shorter sequence are peptides. Today it is possible to synthesize very long chains of amino acids. The upper limit for peptide synthesis is sequence dependent but it is somewhere around 100-120 AA - although technological advances push the limit. At these lengths one may consider recombinant production of proteins as an alternative as it is more cost effective. But there are certain benefits to chemical synthesis that motivate the higher cost, such as material without tags, excellent purity, and the ability to add modifications or dyes at specific sites.
